Following are the double spread pages from leading magazines

                                                                                           What i learnt from them;

  • Always features a main image, according to the subject of the article, that is larger in size than other, if any, images present
  • The heading is usually bold and large at top of the page
  • The article usually starts with a drop capital letter or a red dot to indicate where the article starts
  • Mostly a quote or tagline present in bold letters or a different font to make it stand out
  • The layout color contrasts with the main image
  • The magazine logo is present at either the extreme top or the extreme bottom of the page
  • page number mentioned at the bottom

AS FOUNDATION PORTFOLIO- Final content page

AS RESEARCH WORK; Content page

The second step of the preliminary task was designing the content page of my fashion magazine so i started looking at the content pages of leading magazines
After studying these content pages i figured out about some of the basic things there have to be in a magazine content page
  • Magazine logo and title ( i,e contents) has to be present at the top of the page
  •  Second titles present in different colours to make them stand out
  • The colour and font used for the coverlines has to be eyecatching
  •  Mostly consists of one larger image to draw attention towards a particular story e.g image of the person featuring in the cover story, sometimes more than one images are present
  • Colour schemes usually follows that of the front cover
  • Number of pages should be mentioned

AS FOUNDATION PORTFOLIO; Final cover page

This was the first draft of my magazine cover however i had to discard it as the barcode was missing and the expressions of the model was not according to what i had planned, also i finalised saleeqa to be the final name for my magazine

the following is my final cover page

AS PLANNING; Expressions and Poses

As the title of my magazine is SALEEQA that is a persian word meaning manner and style. I would like my model to pose with grace and poise, So that that expressions could match and fully justify the title of the magazine

AS PLANNING; Mise en scene

MISE EN SCENE- Is the arrangement and setting of the scene
COSTUME
Plays very important part in describing the king of magazine e.g any sports costume for sports magazine, the costumes used for my magazine will be very chic however simple at the same time so they dont make the compostion of my magazine busy.
MAKEUP AND HAIRSTYLE
My magazines players will wear minimal makeup and simple hairdos to make connection with the audience via the expressions easier
LIGHTING
More lighting doesnt necessarily make the image better so i will try to achieve the best possible outcome by adjusting the perfect light required for each picture i take
LOCATION
Most of my shoot for my magazine took place outdoors. I personally prefer outdoor shoot, i feel the natural beauty of the background compliments the shoot
POSITIONING
The ability to capture the image of a magazine cover according to your angles and positioning is a very important power, since the cover is the first impression of the magazine and images used are the essence of that first impression so, it has to be made sure this power is used with intelligence

Being able to pose and feature in a fashion magazine she should be confident, graceful and stylish, someone with an elegant body language, her expressions should be very meaningful and revealing that would help audience to understand the emotion in the pictures and instantly connect with the message.

CLASS ASSIGNMENT

CAMERA ANGLES AND FRAMING SHOTS
This task was carried out as part of a class assignment, it was to understand the use and importance of camera angles. This task required us to choose an object and present it through various camra angles. I chose the famous monument, the statue of liberty as the main object for my project
ESTABLISHING SHOT
A long or an extremely long shot at the beginning of the scene indication where or when the scene takes place

                                                              MASTER SHOT
Often a long shot, from an angle that keeps all the players in view, often perform a double function of an establishing shot aswell

EXTREME LONG SHOT
Shot taken from a very long distance

LONG SHOT
Shot taken from a long distance but no as wide as the extreme long shot

                                                                                                                                          MID SHOT
Shot taken from such a distance that half body of the player/object can be seen

AERIAL/BIRDS VIEW SHOT
A shot taken from a hat, or usually from top of a building or from a helicopter

CLOSEUP
This shot allows very little background to be shown and focuses on either the face or any specific detail of the object or the player

EXTREME CLOSEUP
This shot allows the audience to view a further magnified version of the object

HIGH ANGLE
This shot is not as extreme as the aerial view, usually shot using a crane to elevate the camera

EYE LEVEL
A neutral shot without using any elevation or demotion, the camera is placed five- six feet about the ground, positioned in such a way that the human is actually observing the scene

LOW ANGLE
This shot is taken from below the human eye level

AS PLANNING ; Codes and conventions

Before designing the cover page of my magazine i had to plan everything out to make my task easier and less time consuming
Codes are signs and systems which create meaning in a media text.
Whereas, conventions are the generally accepted ways of doing something
there are two major types of codes
  1. SYMBOLIC CODES
  • Dress Codes- The costume of the character plays very important role in a media text, it has to ba in contrast with the topic of the text
  • Colour Codes- Each colour has a different impact on the how the media media consumers reads and percieve the media text, one has to indulge in critical thinking while planning about the colours of the magazine
  • Non Verbal Codes- Such type of codes include the expressions, the poses used in the media text
      2. TECHNICAL CODES
These involve the work around technology i.e camera angles, editing software etc

AS RESEARCH WORK; Image analysis

Following are the examples of leading magazines covers with an analysis of what they potray
